Two killed, four injured after electric shock near Kalachowki Ganpati pandal

A tragic accident occurred near the entrance of a Ganpati pandal in Mumbai’s Lalbaug, resulting in two deaths and four injuries. The incident took place around 2:20 am on Sunday, near Kalachowki Vibhag Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal on Dattaram Lad Marg. A short circuit, reportedly caused by a temporary electricity meter installed for Ganesh festival celebrations, led to an electric current spreading through the area.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade, along with police, BEST, and civic officials, responded promptly to the scene, disconnecting the power supply and cordoning off the area as a precaution. Among the injured were an eight-year-old girl, Ragini Yadav, and a 33-year-old woman, Sujata. Three others, Kiran Akbar Naik, Tanvi Naresh Hande, and Sahil Sandip Tare, were also injured and are currently receiving treatment.

A 12-year-old girl, Ruhi Singh, was admitted to the ICU in critical condition. The family of Ragini, who was declared dead at Masina Hospital, expressed their grief, stating that they had been waiting in line since around 2 am due to the heavy crowd. A preliminary investigation by BEST officials found that the wiring and MCB had been disconnected by a local electrician.

The incident occurred as large crowds gathered in the area ahead of Sunday’s holiday to visit prominent Ganpati mandals. The deaths add to the recent fatalities in the Lalbaug and Kalachowki area, including a 25-year-old mechanical engineer who died of a cardiac arrest while waiting for darshan at Lalbaugcha Raja on September 17.
