These Israelis want to fly home to vote. Netanyahu is trying to stop them

With Israel's upcoming election on the horizon, tens of thousands of Israeli expatriates are scrambling to return to their homeland to cast their votes. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party is taking measures to prevent some of these individuals from voting, fearing their participation could sway the outcome. The "Fly & Vote" initiative, a grassroots effort backed by the America-Israel Democracy AID Coalition, helps Israelis living abroad secure affordable flights to exercise their democratic rights.

Unlike countries with absentee voting systems, Israel does not allow citizens overseas to cast ballots through mail-in systems. Instead, they must return to Israel to vote. The upcoming vote, scheduled for October 27, marks the first national election following four years of Netanyahu's leadership, a period marked by mass protests and conflict.

Recent polls indicate neither the opposition nor Netanyahu's coalition have secured the necessary 61 seats to form a government. The "Fly & Vote" initiative, launched by a US-based nonprofit, has recorded over 35,000 registrations, with more than 50,000 intending to return to vote. Despite accusations of illegality and foreign funding, the initiative insists it is nonpartisan and operates without receiving any financial benefits.

Likud, however, argues the coalition is a political entity funded by American donations and ties the opposition Democrats party. The organization denies these claims. Participants argue that increased efforts to obstruct their voting rights only bolster their resolve to cast their ballots in shaping Israel's future.
