The hostel years that shaped Abang Jimmy

Abang Jimmy Abang Mordian reflects on his boarding school days at Kolej Datu Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah in Kuching, recalling the challenges he faced during his Form One to Form Five years. Living away from home in the hostel, he studied late into the night, often until 2am, with thin mattresses, broken windows, and constant mosquito problems.

Clothes were washed by hand, as there were no washing machines. Abang Jimmy credits his hostel experiences for shaping his understanding of students' challenges today. Now a senior leader in the energy sector, he visits the hostel to see improvements like ceiling fans, repaired electrical systems, window netting, washing machines, and proper beds.

These upgrades provide students a more comfortable place to rest and study, while attendance has increased and improved. Abang Jimmy believes hostel life teaches independence, resilience, and time management, beyond just academic success. For students at SMK Pusa, a more comfortable dormitory means better sleep, a dry place to study, and less worry about daily chores.

Abang Jimmy revisits the schoolboy he used to be, remembering his late-night studying and hopes that education would open doors, which it ultimately did for him.
