Ten lions found dead in suspected poisoning at Tanzania’s Unesco-listed wildlife reserve

DAR ES SALAAM, Sept 20 — Ten lions have been discovered dead in a suspected poisoning incident at Tanzania’s Unesco-listed Ngorongoro Conservation Area, according to local authorities. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) expressed regret over the incident, stating that ten (10) lions perished on September 18, 2026 in the Ndutu area.

Preliminary investigations suggest the lions succumbed to poisoning, with authorities now conducting an expert inquiry to ascertain the cause and identify any responsible parties. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area has witnessed enduring tensions between authorities and the local nomadic community, with occasional clashes escalating into fatalities since the government initiated an eviction program in 2022.

The Tanzanian government contends that population expansion is encroaching upon wildlife habitats, as the population within Ngorongoro surged from approximately 8,000 in 1959 to over 100,000. In recent news, at least 20 elephants have reportedly died in Kenya’s Amboseli ecosystem, near the Tanzanian border, due to suspected pesticide poisoning.

However, authorities have not conclusively determined whether these deaths were accidental or intentional.
