The Missing in Southern Africa (MISA) has clarified that there is no legal 24-hour waiting period to report a missing person to the South African Police Service (SAPS). The organization is warning citizens about a persistent myth that has caused families to lose valuable time in their search efforts, particularly amid the country's rising gender-based violence killings.

MISA stresses that delays in reporting a missing person can result in the loss of crucial evidence, camera footage, and movement trails. They emphasize that every minute counts when someone goes missing, and that cases involving vulnerability, danger, unusual behavior, or medical concerns are especially urgent. Immediate action, according to MISA, not only saves time but also strengthens investigations and, potentially, saves lives.

To report a missing person, MISA advises families to visit the nearest police station and request that a report be opened. They should bring along recent photographs, detailed descriptions, information about clothing, any medical conditions, vehicle details, and known movements of the missing person. Families are also encouraged to retain the case number and the contact details of the investigating officer.

If police officials tell families they must wait, MISA suggests that they seek to speak with a senior officer such as the Station Commander, Detective Commander, or Charge Office Commander.

MISA calls on police officials and community leaders to help dispel the misleading 24-hour waiting period myth. They urge families to turn to recognized missing persons organizations for guidance and support whenever they suspect a loved one is missing.
