Singapore man, 69, dies an unnatural death alone in Ubi Ave HDB flat 1 month after his son goes overseas to study

On September 17, a 69-year-old man was discovered dead in his Ubi Avenue 1 HDB flat, approximately a month after his youngest son had departed for overseas studies. The individual had been residing alone in the block located at Block 318 after previously sharing the residence with his son. Neighbors expressed concern over a growing foul odor emanating from the unit.

The Lianhe Zaobao newspaper reported the incident on September 19. Police were alerted to a case of unnatural death at the block around 6:45 p.m. on September 17.

One neighbor, identified as Su, explained that she had lived in the area for around 40 years. She stated that the deceased had moved into the flat around two years prior. Su described him as friendly and mentioned that they greeted each other when they encountered one another. The last time Su saw the man was approximately five days before his body was discovered.

The father had four children and had resided with his youngest son before he departed for studies abroad about a month earlier. Ms. Su also mentioned that she first noticed the smell several days prior to the discovery, initially thinking that food had spoiled somewhere within her home. Once the odor intensified, she and her son searched for its source and ultimately determined that it was originating from the deceased's flat. They promptly contacted the police.

Police arrived at the 12th-floor unit following the report, where they found the man lying motionless inside the residential unit. The flat's door and windows were open, with a potent smell detectable from the corridor. The police declared the man dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations did not indicate any suspicion of foul play, and police investigations are currently ongoing.

This unfortunate incident highlights how easily an elderly person living alone can go unnoticed, even within a community filled with neighbors. A simple check-in from family, friends, or neighbors can sometimes make a significant difference. In this case, it was the smell that ultimately alerted people to the fact that something was amiss.
