Sharjah-Oman logistics corridor trade value jumps 66.26%

The Sharjah-Oman logistics corridor witnessed a substantial surge in trade volume, with goods worth around Dh1.7 billion transiting through its pathways within its inaugural three months of operation. This represents a significant 66.26 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Over 34,000 trucks traversed the corridor, while customs officials processed more than 32,000 declarations during this timeframe, as reported by official sources.

The corridor's establishment is the result of a collaborative effort between Sharjah Ports, Customs and Free Zones Authority and Oman Customs. Its primary objective is to streamline the movement of goods between the two countries, thereby enhancing the efficiency of regional supply chains. The route boasts direct customs clearance at border crossings, eliminating additional transfer stages and consequently reducing cargo processing times.

The network comprises key ports such as Khorfakkan Port, Port Khalid, and Hamriyah Port on the Sharjah side, complemented by Khatmat Malaha and Al Madam border crossings. On the Omani end, the corridor links with Sohar Port, Mahdah, and the Al Rawdah Special Economic Zone. The proximity of Khatmat Malaha to Sohar Port, approximately 70 kilometers apart, significantly reduces transit times and transport costs.

To incentivize the use of the corridor, Sharjah has rolled out several initiatives, including exemptions from truck toll-gate fees for qualifying cargo vehicles arriving from Oman through designated routes. These measures aim to lower operational costs and facilitate the swift movement of freight through Sharjah. The initial figures for the first quarter of operation offer a promising glimpse into the potential of land-based logistics links between the UAE and Oman.
