Senior police officer wounded in armed clashes with suspected drug dealers in Iraq’s south

On Saturday, a senior police officer in Iraq was wounded during armed clashes with suspected drug dealers in the southern region of Thi Qar province. The colonel, who headed a raid targeting the suspected criminals, sustained two gunshot wounds, including one in the abdomen and another in the leg. He was hospitalized and underwent successful surgery, with his condition now stable.

The raid resulted in the injury of the two suspects as well. The police force managed to seize one kilogram of crystal meth, a Kalashnikov rifle, ammunition, and five hand grenades. This incident highlights the growing issue of drug trafficking and abuse in Iraq, which has escalated since the 2003 US-led invasion that overthrew Saddam Hussein.

Drug trafficking and addiction have been on the rise in Iraq, posing a significant challenge to the nation's security forces. Security and health officials attribute this surge to weak governments, corruption, porous borders, and a lack of cooperation between government agencies. Since 2003, Iraq has transitioned from merely being a conduit for drug smuggling to a country where drug consumption has reached alarming levels.

Crystal methamphetamine is the most widely used drug, followed by Captagon, tramadol, heroin, and hashish.

In recent years, the Iraqi government has intensified efforts to combat drug smuggling and consumption, both domestically and in collaboration with neighboring countries like Syria, Kuwait, and Lebanon. Numerous arrests of Iraqi and foreign dealers have been made, and drugs have been seized on a daily basis.
