Salobreña plans new avenue as town prepares for expansion

The town of Salobreña is preparing for urban expansion with plans for a new avenue, as announced by Mayor Javier Ortega. This development is part of the Plan de Reforma Interior (PRI) for the UE-S3 area, located at the northern entrance of the town. Mayor Ortega emphasized that the project aims to enhance access, create public spaces, and facilitate urban connections.

The new avenue will span over 5,600 square meters, connecting Calle Antequera and Calle Extramuros. This route will provide an alternative entry point to the town, helping distribute traffic between the beach areas and the national road. The project area, which includes 14,409.64 square meters, will allow for the construction of up to 108 family homes, in line with the current planning rules.

Mayor Ortega clarified that the PRI does not alter the permitted building density set by Salobreña’s PGOU plan. Most of the project space will be allocated to public infrastructure rather than residential housing. Additionally, 21 of the homes will be designated as protected housing.

A resolution from the Junta de Andalucia's environmental authority on April 6, 2026, confirmed that the UE-S3 PRI does not require a strategic assessment. Mayor Ortega defended the public consultation process, acknowledging that the planning document is primarily technical.

Local association Cal y Caña expressed concerns about the development, but Mayor Ortega rejected these criticisms, asserting that the project should be viewed as part of a broader plan for access, public space, facilities, and housing.
