Pune: Market Yard Ganesh Mandal Decorates Idol With Vegetables, Fruits To Honour Farmers

Pune's Market Yard Ganesh mandal has crafted an innovative and eco-friendly tribute to farmers during this year's Ganeshotsav. Instead of the customary flowers and lights, the sanctuary around Lord Ganesha is adorned with a variety of vegetables, fruits, and root crops. Shri Sharada Gajanan Mandal at Gultekdi Market Yard, Pune's principal wholesale hub for produce, has ingeniously transformed the idol decoration into a 'bhajipala aaras' – an elaborate display made entirely from farm produce.

The mandal has utilized leafy greens, radish, carrot, chili, brinjal, tomato, cucumber, pumpkin, along with various fruits and tubers to create a visually stunning and meaningful artwork. The design serves as a strong reminder of the journey of farm produce from the farm to our plates, highlighting the tireless efforts of farmers, traders, and Mathadi workers.

Pune Police invoked the PIT-NDPS Act for the first time against a repeat drug suspect named Yogesh, a member of the mandal. The decision underscores the mandal's commitment to blending religious fervor with a social message. Pune's Ganeshotsav is renowned for its unique fusion of religious devotion and community-oriented initiatives.

The Market Yard mandal has previously demonstrated foresight by establishing an alternative route for immersion processions via Tilak Road, which significantly reduced congestion on the typically overcrowded Laxmi Road during visarjan.

The mandal has a track record of civic and social interventions. After the festival concludes, the mandal plans to distribute the vegetables used for decoration, aiming to prevent wastage and further acknowledge the farmers' contributions.
