Prostate problems on the rise at Kumasi Central Prisons – Prostrate Health Foundation

Approximately 300 inmates at the Kumasi Central Prison have been identified with prostate health issues following a screening campaign conducted by the Prostate Health Foundation Ghana. This discovery has sparked concerns regarding the healthcare requirements of elderly inmates, specifically those over 40 years old, and the necessity for consistent medical examinations and prompt treatment within Ghana's prison system.

The revelation came during a prostate health awareness and screening program held for inmates at the Kumasi Central Prison as part of activities commemorating Prostate Awareness Month. Nana Yaa Konadu, President of the Prostate Health Foundation Ghana, stated that the screening exercise had uncovered a troubling rate of prostate-related conditions among the inmates who took part.

She emphasized that the situation was particularly alarming among inmates aged 40 and above, a demographic that necessitates routine prostate health assessments to enable early detection and treatment. According to her, these findings emphasize the critical need to extend prostate health education and screening services to correctional facilities where obtaining specialized healthcare can be a challenge.

Consequently, the Foundation is advocating for heightened focus on the health concerns of inmates, particularly older prisoners, and promoting regular screening to identify prostate-related conditions at an early stage. The awareness program also offered inmates the opportunity to learn about prostate health, potential warning signs, and the significance of seeking medical assistance when symptoms manifest.
