Promised in Aug 2024, but launch still awaited: Security clearance delays Ambala airport’s take-off

Haryana's ambitious plans for a domestic airport at Ambala have been delayed due to security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. Despite the announcement of flights in August 2024, the project remains unrealized. The enclave project, costing approximately Rs 133 crore, was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in October 2023.

The runway and essential infrastructure are already in place, but delays persist due to security clearance issues. The enclave aims to benefit travelers from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh by providing flight services to various cities. The delay has drawn criticism from the opposition, with Anil Vij, a Cabinet Minister, stating the project would soon become operational, offering advantages to passengers from Haryana and neighboring states.

Officials say the enclave will cater to a minimum of 200 passengers once the terminal is developed at a cost of around Rs 20 crore. The runway at Ambala Air Force Station will be utilized for take-offs and landings. The project was identified under the UDAN scheme, with Rs 25 crore sanctioned for development. However, low passenger numbers at Hisar Airport, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2025, suggest the delay may have long-term implications.
