Powerhouse stadium to be built with bricks from former hospital

Birmingham City Football Club has purchased one million bricks salvaged from the former City Hospital, which is set to be used in the construction of their new Powerhouse stadium. The stadium, located in the planned Sports Quarter, will be surrounded by twelve brick chimney-style towers that will pay tribute to Birmingham's industrial heritage.

The bricks were cleaned, sorted, and restored before being bought by the club, and will be used to replace materials removed after the hospital's closure in 2024. The development also includes documentation of the bricks' manufacturing, storage, and transportation history to be displayed as part of the new stadium. Birmingham City Football Club unveiled plans for the 62,000-capacity stadium last year, emphasizing the significance of using bricks that have been present through more than a century of change in Birmingham.

The club stated that this reuse marks a new phase for materials in the city's regeneration plans, preserving a connection between the city's industrial past and its current development.
