Pentagon wants ‘military versions’ of ChatGPT, Grok: Here’s what they offer

The Pentagon is set to introduce military versions of AI tools ChatGPT and Grok to its GenAI.mil platform, expanding access to specialized AI systems for military personnel and civilian workers. These versions will be available for handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) at Impact Level 5 (IL5), a security clearance that requires additional safeguards.

The military iteration of ChatGPT, named ChatGPT Mil, and the Starshield AI's Grok for Government, an adaptation of Grok, will join a platform that currently hosts 1.7 million users among the department's 3 million-strong workforce.

OpenAI and Elon Musk's SpaceXAI secured contracts worth up to $200 million each for their AI tools, which were integrated into GenAI.mil alongside offerings from Google and Anthropic. ChatGPT Mil, designed for the secure environment of the Pentagon, promises to enhance efficiency in unclassified tasks for the Department of War (DoW), allowing military personnel to focus on their missions. The specialized version of ChatGPT and Grok will retain data within the platform, preventing its use for training AI models.

Starshield AI's Grok for Government offers advanced reasoning capabilities, including auto, fast, and expert settings, which can assist in tasks such as market research analysis for acquisition professionals and supply-chain management for logisticians. These tools promise to expedite operations and improve precision in various operational contexts. However, Anthropic's Claude is notably absent from this list, as the company disputed the Pentagon's restrictions on its technology for autonomous weapons and surveillance.
