Pakistani forces kill 5 militants and free 23 hostages in operation in the southwest

Islamabad (AP) — Pakistani security forces conducted a fierce confrontation and rescued 23 hostages while eliminating five militants in southwest Pakistan, the military announced on Sunday. The exact timing of the hostage-taking remains unknown. The militants had established an unauthorized checkpoint near Kalat in Balochistan province late Friday into Saturday, stopping vehicles to abduct individuals for ransom, extortion, and vehicle theft, according to the military.

The militants, identified as members of the "Fitna al-Hindustan" terror group, allegedly receive support from India, a claim New Delhi has dismissed. Security forces recovered six trucks, three buses, and two cars, along with weapons, ammunition, and explosive materials. No casualties were reported among the security personnel or the freed hostages.

In the aftermath of the operation, troops are continuing their search in the surrounding area for any remaining militants. This operation occurred just over a week after Balochistan's Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti dismissed negotiations with insurgents and vowed to continue security operations until militancy was eradicated from the province.

Insurgents frequently abduct people for ransom following the establishment of illegal checkpoints. In a separate incident last month, the militants killed 18 police officers after kidnapping them. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended the security forces for their actions and pledged to persist with counterterrorism efforts, vowing to eliminate what he called foreign-backed terrorism.

Balochistan has been a battleground for a prolonged insurgency involving various separatist groups, including the BLA, seeking independence from Pakistan's central government in Islamabad. Despite authorities' claims of quelling the insurgency, violence in the region persists.
