One person still in hospital after prison overdoses

One individual remains hospitalized at Midlands Prison in the wake of a series of drug-related overdoses on Friday. The Irish Prison Service confirmed that the incidents were localized to the prison and that no additional overdoses have occurred since a security operation and public alert were implemented. The hospitalization of four prisoners occurred after drugs were delivered via drone to the prison yard, as disclosed by a source to RTÉ News.

Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon expressed concern over the situation, suggesting that it highlights the increasing normalization of addiction within prison walls. Gannon emphasized the need for better recovery options and criticized the current system for not treating inmates as individuals deserving of comprehensive support rather than brief incarceration periods that exacerbate their addiction.

He also pointed out that the €100,000 cost of housing a prisoner could be better utilized for their rehabilitation, given that most incarcerated individuals are there due to addiction-related issues.
