Trump has turned a blind eye to reports of China supplying Iran with satellite imagery and has shown reluctance to confront Beijing over alleged breaches of U.S. voter files in 2020.

The U.S. and China are in a global leadership contest, with China expanding its manufacturing prowess and technological advancements in areas like artificial intelligence and electric vehicles. Trump attempted to counter China with tariffs but found his efforts unsuccessful. China holds a near-monopoly on rare earths critical to electronics, using this leverage to negotiate a trade truce with the U.S. Trump has downplayed his relationship with Xi, likening him to a "great gentleman" and emphasizing their "very good trading relationship."

Despite his efforts, Trump's tariffs have not deterred China's manufacturing growth, which remains strong. China's trade surplus continues to grow, and the country is expanding its military and AI capabilities. However, China is also accused of training its AI companies on U.S. models, posing a potential threat to the U.S. economy.

While some symbolic wins exist in their relationship, it remains uncertain whether the upcoming state visit will yield substantial policy or trade outcomes.
