Number of drought-hit taluks in Karnataka may cross 200

More than 200 taluks across Karnataka could be declared drought-affected, according to Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara. Speaking in Davangere, Parameshwara stated that an additional 52 taluks are expected to be added in the next three to four days, bringing the total to more than 200. Currently, 124 taluks have been identified as drought-affected.

The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized that the list will continue to be reviewed until the end of the monsoon season, alleviating concerns that unfavored taluks might be overlooked. Karnataka had initially reported crop losses amounting to around ₹18,000 crore and sought ₹3,500 crore in compensation from the central government. The losses, assistance for farmers, and relief requests would be discussed during the upcoming special legislature session, with the Opposition's input taken into account.

Parameshwara also criticized the central government for adopting a "stepmotherly" approach to Karnataka, citing the delayed release of ₹17,000 crore under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
