NPA confident of consistent Sentuo output until December

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) remains confident that the Sentuo Oil Refinery will maintain consistent production levels until December, amid rising fuel prices. NPA CEO Edudzi Tameklo made this statement during an interview on JoyNews on September 18, 2026. While this assurance does not eliminate the possibility of supply disruptions, it does alleviate concerns about fuel supply, according to Dr Patrick Kwaku Ofori, the Chief Executive of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD).

Ofori noted that having both Sentuo and the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) operating in Ghana reduces the burden of product supply insecurity. He estimated that the two refineries could collectively meet between 25 and 30 per cent of national consumption, with imports covering the remainder. However, Ofori emphasized that domestic refining alone does not result in lower fuel prices, as both refineries purchase crude oil at internationally benchmarked prices.

Despite this, he does not foresee immediate reductions in pump prices. Ofori also criticized the government's GH¢2-per-litre fuel subsidy, arguing that it benefits large-capacity vehicle owners more than regular commuters. He called for increased investment in public transport and an energy strategy that extends beyond electoral cycles.
