North Korea fires two ballistic missiles off east coast in three hours

On Sunday, North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles into the ocean, according to South Korea's military. This occurred shortly after the country reaffirmed its nuclear capabilities and rejected a UN resolution calling for an end to its nuclear programs. These latest missile tests added to a growing series of displays of military force following President Trump's decision to reduce a joint military exercise with South Korea.

The two missiles, launched from North Korea's eastern coast near Wonsan, traveled approximately 280 miles and over 370 miles respectively, both heading towards the country's eastern waters. South Korean and U.S. officials are now analyzing the details of the second missile. Both missiles eventually landed in the ocean. The South Korean presidential office has called on North Korea to cease such banned ballistic missile launches, maintaining that they are ready to defend themselves against any provocations under a strong alliance with the U.S. Japan's Defense Ministry detected a suspected North Korean missile earlier on Sunday, but it did not land in its territorial waters.

Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and a senior official, dismissed President Trump's overture, stating that reducing the drill would not alter its provocative and aggressive nature. North Korea subsequently launched around ten more short-range ballistic missiles into the sea, apparently in response to the U.S.-South Korea drill.

Kim Yo Jong had previously labeled a recent joint U.S.-led maritime exercise in the region as a "frantic military move" meant to extend American dominance in the Asia-Pacific area. She argued that continuous U.S.-led war rehearsals are the primary cause of escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula and region. She declared that North Korea would defend its sovereignty with ever more assertive actions and that there would be no change in their approach to escalating nuclear deterrence.

Earlier this month, North Korea carried out a joint live-fire drill involving missiles, artillery, and drones, following a five-day trilateral drill between the U.S., South Korea, and Japan. North Korea claimed that its drill included firing various weapons simultaneously, potentially aiming to enhance its capability to overwhelm South Korean and U.S. air defenses.
