Ngunjiri Wambugu suggests Muhoho Kenyatta as Jubilee’s next party leader

Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament Wambugu Wambugu has proposed Muhoho Kenyatta, brother of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, as the potential next leader of the Jubilee Party, according to a statement released on his social media accounts on September 20, 2026. Wambugu's suggestion comes as Uhuru Kenyatta has agreed to relinquish his leadership position in the party following a ruling that prohibits him from holding a party leadership role.

Jeremiah Kioni, a former Ndaragwa Member of Parliament and another party leader, responded to Wambugu's proposal, expressing his own interest in becoming the party's next leader. Kioni emphasized that the leadership transition must be carried out through a democratic, transparent, and lawful process involving the party delegates. The National Delegates Convention (NDC), he asserted, is the cornerstone of the party's leadership structure and determines who succeeds the outgoing leader.

Kioni's declaration of his candidacy aligns with the party's constitution, procedures, and established rules. Despite his intention to replace Kenyatta, Kioni expressed gratitude towards Uhuru Kenyatta for his contributions to the party and the nation. He acknowledged Uhuru's instrumental role in establishing Jubilee as a powerful political force in Kenya.
