NDC Suffers Defection As Members Join PDP in Enugu

A significant shift has occurred within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State as over 6,000 members have defected to the rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This happened in the lead-up to the 2027 general election, with the defections formally welcomed by PDP leadership in the state. The defectors, led by Godwin Obasi, the NDC’s Coordinator of Directorate of Contact and Mobilization, cited the party's choice of unpopular candidates for various positions as the reason for their departure.

Obasi noted that representatives came from every electoral ward and local government area in the state, stating that they exercised their right and choice to join the PDP, believing it to be a better alternative heading into the 2027 elections.

The PDP’s state chairman, Vitus Okechi, welcomed the defections, describing them as timely and patriotic. He assured the defectors of equal rights and full participation in the activities of the PDP. Nnaji, the PDP candidate for governor in Enugu State, highlighted the defection as a significant boost for the party’s mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.

He criticized the current administration of Governor Peter Mbah, alleging that it had only introduced new taxes that burden residents. Additionally, Nnaji pointed out that the state’s development progress has not kept pace with the financial resources the government has received since President Bola Tinubu's removal of fuel subsidies.

He called on all PDP supporters across Enugu State to actively participate in the upcoming elections, asserting that the party is prepared to deliver effective governance to the people.
