Nation's 'best bathtub' locked in for Olympic rowers

Queensland's Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie affirmed the state's commitment to the 2032 Olympic rowing event at Rockhampton's Fitzroy River despite criticism over the location. The government addressed concerns about tidal currents, water depths, the river's winding path, and the presence of 500 crocodiles. Deputy Premier Bleijie stated, "Let's be blunt, there were lots of people in a campaign against rowing on the Fitzroy saying that it was not fair... that has all proven to be absolute rubbish."

Paddle Worldwide and World Rowing approved the site for competition following a technical assessment, which included Rockhampton's winds and flooding rains. However, the independent Games authority has yet to finalize a report on the site's design, value for money, and legacy. Queensland must now handle the superficial aspects of the course, such as the finishing tower and start line.

Local MP Glen Kelly emphasized the event's value for the region and rural youth, calling the Fitzroy River the "best bathtub in Australia." The river's safety plan includes a "crocodile, crocodile, crocodile" call for crocodile sightings and measures to suspend racing and have competitors return to the bank.
