Najib’s ability to pay RM50mi fine ‘not entirely in his hands’, say lawyers

Former prime minister Najib Razak faces serving the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, having received a conditional pardon that mandates a RM50 million fine payment. This fine, a condition for his house arrest, proves partially out of his control, as most of his assets remain frozen under government orders, according to his lawyers.

Messrs Shafee & Co, his legal firm, stated that Najib is currently in Kajang prison while his legal team examines the practicalities of meeting the fine's condition. They emphasized that while most of his bank accounts and properties are under freezing orders, the disposal of these assets is not entirely within his control. The lawyers also noted that Najib expressed gratitude for the assistance offered to help meet the fine, but urged those aiding him to do so voluntarily and according to their means, to avoid burdening or obligating Umno members, supporters, or the general public.
