Najib’s ability to pay RM50mi fine ‘not entirely in his hands’, say lawyers

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak's ability to fulfill a RM50 million fine condition for his house arrest is partially out of his control, according to his lawyers. The fine is part of a conditional pardon granted to Najib on Friday, which allows him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.

However, most of his assets are under freezing orders and enforcement proceedings, limiting his control over disposing of them. His legal team, Shafee & Co, is studying the terms of the pardon and their practical implications, as Najib weighs his options for meeting the condition. His lawyers noted that a significant portion of his assets remains under government control, making it difficult for him to satisfy the fine condition.

Despite the challenges, Najib has expressed gratitude towards those who have offered assistance, but his lawyers emphasized that he does not want Umno members, supporters, or the public to feel obligated to help him. The lawyers also noted that Najib's gratitude for the kindness shown by those who assisted him voluntarily is a source of strength at this difficult time.
