Mutuse: It will be difficult for the opposition to settle on one flag bearer

Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse has expressed his doubts about the opposition coming together to support a single candidate for the 2027 General Election. During an interview on September 20, 2026, Mutuse criticized the opposition leaders for not being able to agree on one flag bearer. "It will be difficult to find a single candidate among the opposition," he stated.

Mutuse also targeted Kitui County Senator Enock Wambua, who recently suggested that if Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka were to be chosen as the opposition's flag bearer, the Kamba community would withdraw their support from the opposition. In response to this, Mutuse called on opposition leaders to set aside their disagreements and choose a candidate capable of contesting against President William Ruto in the upcoming election.

The opposition is currently in a state of deadlock, with each principal in the United Alternative Government expressing differing opinions on the most suitable time to select a presidential candidate. While all the principals have shown interest in the top position, they have vowed to eventually come to an agreement on one person, with the rest of the coalition backing the chosen candidate to prevent President Ruto from securing a second term.

However, the main challenge remains to determine when this decision should be made. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who also serves as the convener of the United Opposition, had suggested that the coalition should announce its presidential candidate within the first quarter of 2026. This proposal was part of his initial demands when the coalition was formed, alongside other reforms such as rebranding the coalition to Komboa Kenya.

Musyoka believed that naming a flag bearer early would help unite the coalition and give the candidate sufficient time to connect with the voters before the 2027 general election.
