MSSU women's soccer loses to Washburn Friday

Missouri Southern State University's (MSSU) women's soccer team suffered a 6-1 defeat against No. 18 ranked Washburn University on Friday. This marked the first game of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) conference for both teams. Washburn entered the match with an impressive record of 5 wins, 0 losses, and 1 draw, having scored 12 goals while conceding only one.

The Ichabods initially demonstrated strong pressure on the Lions, registering five shots within the first ten minutes. They capitalized on their early opportunities, scoring three goals within an additional six minutes. In contrast, MSSU made several attempts to create their own chances, with Presley Whitmore taking a shot and Talia Sanders contributing two more.

However, none of these efforts resulted in a goal. Washburn extended their lead with two more goals before halftime, resulting in a 5-0 scoreline. The two teams that departed the field were not the same as those that returned, as numerous substitutions were made by both sides. MSSU demonstrated significant control during the first half, influencing the game's tempo and managing to score their first goal in the 67th minute.

Sophomore Sophie Spoonmore skillfully navigated the left side of the box, delivering a precise shot that marked the Lions' first goal since August. Despite the scoreboard issue causing a delay, MSSU continued to exert pressure on Washburn. The Lions managed to extend their lead to six goals with just over ten minutes left in the match.
