Mets can’t hang with Phillies in gloomy loss

Starting pitcher Jonah Tong struggled, allowing four runs and four walks while striking out only five. The Phillies capitalized early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Luis Arraez and a run-bating single by Alec Bohm.

Tong faltered again, giving up a walk and two hits before being deployed to first base, where he was hit in the collision. He returned to the game, pitching a perfect inning, but the Mets couldn't convert their baserunners into runs. The Phillies' Cristopher Sanchez, who struck out 24 Mets batters this season, silenced the Mets in the second half, finishing the game with six strikeouts and just two runs allowed.

Bo Bichette was the only Met to score, hitting a solo home run in the sixth inning. Despite a late rally featuring pinch-hit singles by AJ Ewing and Brett Baty, the Mets' late-inning struggles proved costly in a gloomy 7-2 loss.
