Mark Zuckerberg to OpenAI, Anthropic: Your AI agents, your responsibility

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged the deep division within the technology industry regarding how to regulate artificial intelligence. In a new post titled “The Future Is for Everyone”, Zuckerberg stated that while some labs, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, are advocating for a slower progression until safety measures catch up, his personal belief is that ensuring alignment and trust are becoming the most crucial differentiators for AI agents.

Zuckerberg emphasized that labs possess a natural incentive to ensure their AI agents align with users, warning competitors that misaligned systems will rapidly lose user trust. He highlighted Meta's decision to delay the release of its Muse model for several months in order to enhance safety and security, explaining that they didn't request this delay from others and simply implemented it as they deemed it the right course of action.

Zuckerberg also advocated for the use of independent evaluators as standard industry practice, noting that Meta already collaborates with external advisors. Furthermore, he underlined Meta's commitment to allocating the majority of its computational resources towards serving users rather than pursuing recursive self-improvement, framing this as a safer approach to AI development.
