Mariska Hargitay Had A Starring Role In A Massively Popular '80s Primetime Soap Opera

Mariska Hargitay gained fame for her role as Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU, but her acting career stretches far beyond this iconic character. Before her breakout role in Law & Order, Hargitay showcased her talent on the popular 80s primetime soap opera Falcon Crest, which aired from 1981 to 1990. Falcon Crest revolved around the Gioberti/Channing family, a family deeply involved in the wine industry, and their numerous feuds and interpersonal conflicts.

Hargitay played Carly Fixx, Dan Fixx's (Brett Cullen) half-sister, who entered the show in Season 7. Carly and Dan later discovered they were not blood relatives since Carly's father was not her real father. Despite being featured in the show's opening credits, Hargitay's time on Falcon Crest was limited, appearing in just 15 episodes across Seasons 7 and 8.

While Falcon Crest was a hit for several years, ratings began to decline in the early 1990s, leading CBS to cancel the soap opera in 1990 due to a significant drop to only 19% of the available primetime audience. Although there have been discussions about a possible reboot of the show since the late 2000s, as of now, it remains uncertain whether such a project will come to fruition.
