Marcus Massalami Makes Drag Race History as Spain’s First Drag King

Marcus Massalami, a performer from Xàtiva, Valencia, will etch his name in Drag Race history by becoming Spain's inaugural drag king contestant on the global Drag Race franchise's sixth season, Drag Race España. Scheduled to premiere on Atresplayer on September 27, the new series features 12 contestants, with Marcus's casting marking a significant milestone for the franchise's representation of the LGBTQ+ community.

Although Velma Jones, who appeared in Canada's Drag Race, is renowned for performing as both a drag queen and a drag king, Marcus will exclusively present his drag king persona, elevating the visibility of drag king artistry. Marcus's inspiration stems from glamorous men like flamboyant Spanish musician Tino Casal and his father, alongside tributes to lesbians who challenged societal norms by donning traditionally masculine clothing.

His stage character embodies a powerful presence, marked by confidence, swagger, and humor. Marcus, who is deaf, humorously reveals that he removes his hearing aid when provoked. Alongside co-contestants like Coco Luna, Liz Dust, Sorny, and Vanessa Artiles, Marcus will bring a unique perspective to the competition, highlighting the importance of television exposure for LGBTQ+ artists and their stories.
