LASTMA warns against using skates, wheeled shoes on Lagos highways

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, has cautioned against the use of rolling skate shoes, wheeled footwear, and similar recreational devices on public highways and other roads frequented by vehicles. In a statement, the Authority emphasized that such practice poses significant traffic hazards, especially when users glide alongside moving vehicles, cross roads without caution, or move through traffic without adequate protective gear or adult supervision.

LASTMA highlighted that the increasing popularity of footwear with concealed or retractable wheels on roads designed for motorized traffic has raised safety concerns. Public highways, unlike designated recreational areas, are complex environments where vehicles, motorcycles, pedestrians, and other road users coexist, leading to unpredictable traffic conditions.

Using wheeled recreational devices in these settings can impair users' ability to react to sudden vehicle movements, thereby increasing collision risks and severity of injuries. LASTMA advised that the introduction of such devices can greatly reduce users' responsiveness to unexpected vehicular actions, leading to catastrophic collisions and life-altering injuries.

The Authority recommended that parents, guardians, schools, and caregivers discourage children from using rolling skate shoes for recreational purposes on highways, expressways, bridges, service lanes, and other areas open to vehicular traffic. LASTMA also appealed to users to limit skating activities to designated recreational areas, private properties, and safe locations suitable for such activities.

Users were advised to wear protective equipment, including helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, and other safety gear. LASTMA's General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized that road safety is a collective responsibility necessitating constant vigilance, discipline, and respect for the inherent risks of public roads. He stressed that protecting human life should always be the priority, with no recreational activity exempt from this obligation.

LASTMA also urged motorists to be more cautious around children and young people using wheeled footwear, particularly in residential areas, school zones, and other places where vulnerable road users might unexpectedly enter the road. The Authority called on the public to report dangerous traffic situations, road obstructions, crashes, vehicle breakdowns, and other urgent incidents promptly through the LASTMA toll-free short code.

LASTMA reiterated its dedication to safeguarding lives, promoting responsible road user behavior, and fostering a safer and more orderly transportation environment across Lagos State.
