Japan come from behind to beat Fiji and win Pacific Nations Cup

TOKYO: Japan secured a thrilling 20-15 victory over Fiji on Saturday, reclaiming the Pacific Nations Cup title after a seven-year absence. The highly anticipated match saw Japan outmaneuver and outmuscle the islanders, dethroning Fiji who had dominated the last eight editions. Japan's triumph was marked by three tries in the capacity Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium, all originating from mauls - Mamoru Harada, Ben Gunter, and substitute Samisoni Tua; while Sam Greene added a conversion and penalty.

Failing to match Japan's fitness, Fiji managed to score two tries, courtesy of Virimi Vakatawa and captain Tevita Ikanivere, with Caleb Muntz contributing a conversion and Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula a penalty. Despite initially overpowering Japan, Fiji's physical strength proved insufficient against their hosts. Vakatawa broke through the Japanese defense in the 10th minute for his first try despite a valiant effort from four Japanese defenders.

Japan took the lead in the 22nd minute with Harada scoring a lineout maul, but Fiji responded with a swift try from Ikanivere in the second half. Japan maintained dominance throughout, leaving Fiji fatigued. Gunter and Tua capitalized on rolling mauls, leading to Tua's match-winning try in the 57th minute, sealing Japan's victory.
