Israeli settler killed in West Bank, suspect arrested

An Israeli settler was fatally shot in the West Bank on Sunday, the day before the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, according to Israel's military. The suspected gunman behind the attack was subsequently apprehended by IDF soldiers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the shooting as a "murderous attack" carried out ahead of Yom Kippur, a significant holiday for Jews.

Israel Gantz, head of the Yesha Council representing West Bank settlers, confirmed the deceased settler was one of their own. The IDF reported that the suspect was located at a hospital in Ramallah. The military chief, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, stated that the military remained on high alert and prepared across all sectors.

Israeli checkpoints in the West Bank were reportedly closed due to heightened security measures. Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed solidarity with the victim's family, stating that terror would not break Israel's spirit. Additionally, the military reported eliminating a man who attempted a ramming attack against IDF soldiers in the Ganim area near Jenin.

The Palestinian health ministry identified the attacker as Sami Zwaideh, 32, who was killed by Israeli forces. Since the start of the Gaza war, Israeli forces or settlers have killed over 1,100 Palestinians in the West Bank.
