How GCU, ASU basketball programs build their rosters among NIL changes

The NIL (name, image and likeness) era in college athletics has disrupted traditional recruiting methods and created a chaotic atmosphere for programs like Arizona State and Grand Canyon University (GCU). In a panel discussion at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame's 14th annual Jerry Colangelo Golf Classic fundraiser in Phoenix, ASU men's basketball coach Randy Bennett and GCU men's basketball coach Bryce Drew discussed the challenges they face in building their rosters amidst the changing landscape of college sports.

Bennett and Drew expressed their uncertainty about the direction of college basketball, emphasizing the need to adapt and make good decisions. Drew, who entered his sixth year at GCU, humorously pointed out the similarities between the NIL era and the NBA in terms of salaries, agents, and financial considerations, drawing parallels with NBA legends Paul Pierce and Charles Barkley.

The discussion also touched upon the financial literacy among college student-athletes, with Hall of Famer Ralph Sampson suggesting that players need to learn more about managing their money. Drew humorously shared about his team's roster, mentioning 17 players and three fifth-year seniors involved in court cases, including two who played in the NBA Summer League. The polarizing debate over paying college athletes has led to the Protect College Sports Act bill, which is expected to reach a Senate floor vote soon.
