How Australia will sell its bid for a UN security seat

Australia plans to launch its official campaign for a seat on the United Nations Security Council in New York on Sunday, ahead of a week-long series of meetings at the UN General Assembly. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will push for a two-year term for Australia in 2029 and 2030, as one of the 10 non-permanent members. The campaign, named "we listen, we partner, we protect," will emphasize boosting the voices of middle powers and smaller nations at the UN.

Australia's ban on social media for individuals under 16 and recent efforts to regulate artificial intelligence will be central to the pitch. Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that Australia aims to uphold international order through the security council, focusing on conflict prevention, protection of civilians, and defending shared global rules.
