Games-Japan Win First Gold of Home Asian Games in Men’s Individual Triathlon

NAGOYA, Japan – Japan secured their inaugural gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoa Asian Games on Sunday, with Takumi Hojo claiming victory in the men's individual triathlon. Hojo started the race in fourth place in the water and the cycling segment in fifth, but surged ahead during the run to clinch the win by a narrow margin of nine seconds over China's Zhang Xirui. Kazakhstan's Arlan Zhanabay rounded out the podium in third place, finishing six seconds behind Hojo.

Expressing his excitement, Hojo credited favorable weather conditions for his performance, mentioning that even the rain remained away from the event when he lined up for the start. The Japanese athlete had previously claimed the gold medal in the mixed relay at the Hangzhou Games three years ago, and he aimed to replicate that success. "I planned to attack using my strengths right until the end," Hojo stated.

The win provided a significant morale boost for the Japanese team, enabling them to pass the baton to the women's team and other athletes for the relay events. Uzbek competitor Aleksandr Kurishov led the swimming competition but struggled on the bike, ultimately finishing 20th in the race.
