Ed Sheeran calls Gaza situation ‘unjustifiable’ after Palestine controversy

The English singer addressed the situation in Gaza, describing it as "catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate." He expressed his heartbreak over the scale of devastation and the loss of civilian and children's lives.

The controversy began when Macklemore was dropped from Sheeran's U.S. tour after making pro-Palestinian comments on stage at an earlier show in New Jersey. This led to the withdrawal of the remaining opening acts for Sheeran's U.S. tour. During his remarks at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran admitted that he has had to make difficult decisions in the past week and admitted that he had made mistakes, expressing his deep regret.

Sheeran, who has traditionally stayed out of politics, said he was caught in the middle of an argument about freedom of speech and the complex political issue of the Israel-Hamas war. He referenced the massacre at the Nova Music Festival on Oct. 7, 2023, stating that what happened in Israel was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain. Sheeran also expressed his sympathy for the Gaza situation, describing it as devastating and the loss of civilians and children's lives.

The controversy began when Macklemore announced that he had been dropped from Sheeran's tour after making pro-Palestinian comments on stage earlier. In a video from the New Jersey show, Macklemore expressed his intention to stand up and say "Free Palestine." He also defended himself by stating that criticizing Israel or opposing genocide does not equate to criticizing Jewish people.

Sheeran clarified that the decision to drop Macklemore from the tour was made by the promoter, not by himself, as Macklemore's contract was with the promoter.
