Ed Sheeran breaks silence on Gaza after Macklemore tour uproar

Ed Sheeran, the British pop star, apologized on Saturday for his handling of a controversy involving rapper Macklemore being removed as an opening act. The issue arose after Macklemore expressed support for Palestine during a concert, leading to the removal of Macklemore from the tour.

In Philadelphia, Sheeran addressed the audience, calling the October 2023 Hamas attack that killed 1,200 Israelis "horrific." However, he also denounced Israel's war on Gaza, describing it as both "catastrophic" and "unjustifiable and disproportionate." Sheeran further criticized the systemic injustice in the West Bank, where Israel has allowed a significant expansion of Jewish settlements.

This marked a significant shift from Sheeran's previous stance, when he had posted on Instagram that his concert audiences do not expect a political forum. The controversy stemmed from Macklemore's comments about not being allowed to perform at stadiums in the U.S. if he continued to advocate for Palestine.

Despite the removal of Macklemore from the tour, Sheeran expressed deep concern about concert venues vetting performers' content. He emphasized that such practices should not be allowed in the "free world."

Local residents outside the stadium expressed mixed opinions on the matter. While some, like Joy VanRuler, a teacher, supported both artists and emphasized that the focus should be on the music, others, like Javier Hernandez, a designer, believed that Macklemore should have avoided discussing politics, suggesting that it only fueled the situation.
