Duyong rep Noor Helmy’s popularity among all ‘a big hurdle to DAP’

The DAP party faces a significant challenge in regaining the Duyong state seat in Melaka, according to political analyst Lau Zhe Wei. This is largely due to the growing popularity of Noor Helmy Abdul Halem, the first-term Duyong assemblyman from Umno. His widespread appeal across all communities in Duyong, regardless of background, has been enhanced by his active presence on social media, where he frequently interacts with constituents, including an influential supporter known as "Uncle Wong."

Despite DAP's efforts to put forward a candidate and promote them, attacking Noor Helmy, especially in unreasonable matters, could backfire and harm DAP's prospects in other seats as well. The success of DAP's campaign in Duyong could have a broader impact on the party's image throughout Melaka. DAP recently announced its intention to contest eight seats in the upcoming state election, including the Duyong seat, which it hopes to reclaim from the ruling Barisan Nasional party.

Noor Helmy's popularity has risen since his victory in the 2021 election, securing a narrow margin over his DAP predecessor, Damian Yeo. DAP analyst Mazlan Ali suggests that DAP's best chance of winning lies in a three-way contest involving BN, Perikatan Nasional, and Pakatan Harapan, which could potentially divide Malay votes. However, he acknowledges that Umno's strong political presence in Melaka, especially in Duyong's 60% Malay voter base, poses a considerable obstacle to DAP's efforts to regain the seat.
