DR Congo expands Ebola vaccination to Ituri, over 3,700 people vaccinated

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has expanded Ebola vaccination efforts to Ituri Province, home to the outbreak's epicenter, with over 3,700 people receiving the Ervebo vaccine. The vaccination study, BRAVO, led by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) in collaboration with Congolese health authorities and the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), aims to vaccinate approximately 20,000 frontline workers in Ituri and North Kivu provinces.

Despite the Ervebo vaccine being developed against the Zaire virus rather than the Bundibugyo virus causing the current outbreak, the study will assess its potential effectiveness against the latter. As of mid-September, 16,520 doses of Ervebo had been allocated to the DRC, with 3,771 vaccinations completed as of Sept. 17. The outbreak, declared in May, has become the largest and deadliest Ebola outbreak in the DRC's history and the second-largest globally.
