Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj announced plans for a meeting with US President Donald Trump next week during his visit to New York. Selenskyj spoke with Trump via telephone and discussed various issues, according to a telegram update. A meeting in New York, where both presidents are attending the United Nations General Assembly, could lead to new negotiations aimed at ending the Ukraine war.

Selenskyj emphasized the importance of the diplomatic dynamic. The precise date for the meeting has not been disclosed yet. Selenskyj highlighted the priority of the peace process, following a recent visit by US senior negotiator Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner to Kiev. This was their first visit to Ukraine in their roles as mediators, allowing them to gather information on the country's situation.

Previously, they had been to Russia multiple times, a nation that has been at war with Ukraine for over four and a half years. Selenskyj stated that they plan to resume direct negotiations between Kiev and Moscow under US mediation to end the conflict. Russia is reportedly considering this possibility for October. Peace talks stalled last winter due to the Iran war and were subsequently halted.

Witkoff and Kushner are now making a new attempt to resolve the Ukraine conflict. "There are ideas for de-escalation measures and fundamental security issues," Selenskyj said. "We are working together with the American team and are ready to take serious steps." He did not provide further details. The president has repeatedly called for the United States to provide anti-aircraft missiles to defend against Russian ballistic missile attacks.

Both sides continue to accuse each other of lacking interest in ending the hostilities. Ukraine fights, with Western military aid, to reclaim territories occupied by Russia.
