Denmark fast-tracks $276 million military package for Ukraine

Denmark is speeding up a military aid package for Ukraine amounting to approximately $276 million, with the primary objective of enhancing Ukrainian air defenses before the fall and winter. Ukraine's Defense Ministry announced this 31st Danish aid package on September 19 via Telegram, although the specific contents remain undisclosed for security reasons.

The assistance aims to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities against persistent Russian aerial assaults. Denmark, a staunch supporter of Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion, has also implemented novel mechanisms to fund Ukrainian defense production. This acceleration in assistance occurred following talks between Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara and his Danish counterpart, Jeppe Bruus, according to the Defense Ministry.

Reuters reported on September 18 that Denmark expedited the approximately $276 million package following a Russian warship's flare incident towards a Danish military helicopter, which was on a surveillance mission in international waters. Danish Defense Minister Jeppe Bruus emphasized that the incident would not deter Denmark from increasing its support for Ukraine; instead, it would intensify assistance primarily focused on strengthening Ukrainian air defenses.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen echoed this sentiment, stating that such attempts to intimidate Denmark would have the opposite effect. This new aid marks Denmark's 31st military support package for Ukraine, following the previous 30th package announced on June 30, which was worth about 4.4 billion Danish kroner and encompassed ammunition, weapons, military equipment, training assistance, and funding for direct investments in Ukraine's defense industry.
