Defensive failure offsets offensive progress for Purdue football at UCLA

Purdue football displayed a strong aerial attack, much like some older Boilermaker teams, but their defense proved to be a recurring problem. In their 52-38 loss to UCLA at Rose Bowl Stadium, the Boilermakers briefly took a 28-24 lead in the second half, only to have their defense turn the tide against them again. This marked Purdue's 19th consecutive Big Ten loss of the season.

Offensively, the Boilermakers earned a B- grade. Offensive coordinator Josh Henson proved to be astute, but two early fumbles caused by UCLA resulted in touchdowns. Ryan Browne also shone, throwing for 336 yards and a touchdown, except for a crucial interception late in the game. Xavier Townsend also made a significant impact with a breakout performance, including a 75-yard touchdown on Purdue's first play.

However, the Boilermakers failed to capitalize on a touchdown that was disallowed due to an ineligible receiver. Defensively, Purdue received an F grade. Three consecutive touchdown drives from UCLA set the tone, and a missed field goal only extended the lead to four straight scoring drives. UCLA's running game was formidable, but their quarterback Nico Iamaleava had no touchdowns through their first two games, throwing for two touchdowns in that game on Saturday.

By halftime, UCLA had accumulated 313 yards, increasing their total to 645 yards with 8.1 yards per play. The Boilermakers' defense struggled to stop UCLA's ground game dominance. Special teams received a B grade, with coordinator James Shibest's unit continuing to shine. They had two penalties, but the unit was still a bright spot.

Dylan Drennan, the Boilermakers' quarterback, worked hard on his passing accuracy. Special teams also had some bright moments, such as a 47-yard pass to Antonio Harris that set up Jacobo Echeverria Lozano's lone field goal. However, an interception late in the game could have been a game-changer if not for that error. Coaching earned a C grade, primarily due to the defensive staff.

The issue of inadequate players on the field stems from recruiting evaluations. The fake punt came at the right time, but Purdue settled for a red zone field goal, their sixth in three games. The team had six penalties for 50 yards, which wasn't ideal but was better than the past two weeks. Wayne Knight was the game MVP, rushing for nearly 1,400 yards last season at James Madison and continuing that performance, gaining 177 yards on 18 carries during this game.
