Civilian hospitalised after alleged machete attack by prison officers, inmates

A civilian, Opoku Afriyie, remains hospitalized in serious condition following an alleged machete attack by prison officers and inmates at Kenyasi Settlement Camp Prison in the Ahafo Region, Ghana. The victim, a resident of Kenyasi No. 2 and a sound system operator, was reportedly targeted on Thursday while transporting a passenger on his motorbike.

According to Afriyie, a prison officer and three inmates intercepted him and accused him of stealing yams from the officer's farm. The attackers allegedly inflicted deep wounds on Afriyie's arms, legs, abdomen, neck and other parts of his body using machetes. Another prison officer arrived later, handcuffed Afriyie and took him to the Kenyasi Settlement Camp Prison.

Police officers subsequently took him to Asutifi North District Hospital for treatment. Afriyie's injuries are severe, causing him intense pain in his abdomen, head, eyes and waist, with some fingers and hands also affected. Afriyie is demanding justice and the arrest of those responsible, as well as financial assistance to cover his medical expenses. The Asutifi District Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident.
