Bloc MPs to gather near Ottawa with U.S. tariffs, Quebec election in focus

Bloc Québécois MPs will convene near Ottawa to prepare for the resumption of Parliament, with the looming threat of Canada-U.S. trade tensions dominating their deliberations. The caucus will convene in Cantley, Quebec, a mere 20 kilometers from Parliament Hill, ahead of their return to the House of Commons on Monday. Over the summer, Bloc Quebecois has been advocating for greater support for businesses adversely affected by U.S. tariffs, as escalating threats have fueled apprehensions about the economy and rising costs of living.

The party also invested substantial resources in an unsuccessful bid to secure a federal byelection in Chicoutimi—Le Fjord, located in Quebec's Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean region. Bloc leader Yves-François Blanchet made multiple visits to the riding, while fellow Bloc MPs Mario Simard and Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe dedicated considerable time to supporting candidate Caroline Dubé.

Ultimately, Liberal Daniel Gobeil emerged victorious in the August 31st byelection, securing a seat previously held by Conservative Richard Martel since 2018. Martel had resigned his position following his appointment to the Senate. The campaign also provided Bloc MPs with an opportunity to underscore their commitment to safeguarding supply management, a system regulating production and imports within Canada's dairy, poultry, and egg sectors.

Legislation limiting the federal government's ability to make concessions on supply management in future trade agreements was enacted last year. This issue resurfaced this summer as Canada and the United States neared an agreement that could have mitigated their trade dispute, though Ottawa ultimately rejected it. Since the failure to reach a deal, trade tensions have persisted, accompanied by ongoing concerns about their impact on the economy and the cost of living.

The Bloc will convene without Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay, a former Bloc Québécois MP who departed federal politics to contest the Parti Québécois in the provincial Oct. 5 election. As Bloc MPs prepare for the parliamentary session, they will also closely monitor Quebec's provincial election campaign as it nears its conclusion, given the shared advocacy for Quebec independence between the two parties.
