Atletico win feisty Madrid derby against 10-man Real

The upcoming La Liga match between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid will see the return of a fierce rivalry between their managers, Diego Simeone and Jose Mourinho. The game will take place at the Metropolitano Stadium, marking one of the final five matches in the Spanish top division before a break for international fixtures. Their first encounter as opposing managers occurred in 2012, with Mourinho's Real Madrid defeating Atletico 4-1 at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Since then, both managers have clashed in the Champions League, with Mourinho's Chelsea being eliminated by Atletico in 2014.

Mourinho has won all three Madrid derbies against Simeone, while the Argentine manager's side triumphed in the 2013 Copa del Rey final, ending a 14-year wait for a derby victory. Currently, Real Madrid sits in second place with six points ahead of Barcelona, having won five of their six matches, including a 3-2 victory away at Elche. Their last league match saw them lead 2-0 before Atletico equalized twice, but Real eventually won with a 91st-minute goal from Carlos Espi.

Atletico Madrid, sitting behind Real by two points and in fourth place, bounced back from losses against Athletic Club and Liverpool with consecutive victories, including a 3-0 win at Real Sociedad and a 4-0 thrashing at home against Osasuna. Simeone, who has managed Atleti in over 800 games since taking charge in 2011, notes that Real is better at transitioning after losing possession, urging his team to read the game well and avoid giving away turnovers.
