(Asiad) S. Korean pentathletes show progress in adapting to new obstacle discipline

In Anjo, Japan, South Korean modern pentathletes showcased their adaptability to the sport's new obstacle racing discipline at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The team secured a total of five medals, including two golds, two silvers and one bronze. Seong Seung-min claimed the women's individual title, becoming the first South Korean female pentathlete to achieve this feat.

The South Korean men's team also triumphed in gold, marking their second consecutive win at the Asian Games. Jun Woong-tae secured silver for the South Korean women's team, while Lee Jong-hyeon claimed bronze in the men's individual event. Obstacle racing, introduced for the first time at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was replaced by show jumping in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

South Korean coaches and athletes dedicated significant efforts over the past two years to adjust to the new format and maintain their performance levels. Head coach Kim Sung-jin acknowledged the challenges faced during this transition, but emphasized the team's success at the Asian Games as a testament to their progress. In an effort to facilitate the adaptation process, the Korea Modern Pentathlon Federation provided obstacle racing facilities for local competitions, supported training equipment, shared related videos, invited foreign experts, and helped athletes train overseas.

These initiatives allowed South Korean pentathletes to make notable strides on the international stage in the lead-up to the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
