AI lacks ethical awareness, responsibility remains with humans: expert

Artificial intelligence lacks ethical awareness, according to Dr. Intisar Al-Kayyal. As the Vice President of the Artificial Intelligence Governance Association, Dr. Al-Kayyal stated that AI systems currently do not possess an understanding of concepts like harm, responsibility, or consequences. While AI can identify data and suggest decisions or actions autonomously, it is humans and institutions who bear the accountability for their use.

Dr. Al-Kayyal emphasized that humans must review, audit, and monitor AI systems. She warned against granting AI full autonomy in decision-making and stressed that responsibilities should be clearly defined throughout the entire lifecycle of AI models, from their initial design and development, through testing and deployment, and continuing with their use and ongoing monitoring after launch.
