A Michigan collector paid $30 for Gertrude Abercrombie’s 1951 painting at an estate sale, unaware it had been missing from public view for 75 years. After an archival photograph helped confirm its identity, an expert authenticated the work. Alderman Merriam’s Shells will be auctioned in New York with an estimate of $150,000 to $250,000.
